Sasha’s Power Shift Story

Hi my name’s Sasha Hunt. I live on the far north coast, in Lismore, and work recruiting rural and regional high school students for Power Shift ‘09.

Working on Power Shift gives me a sense of purpose, it creates an incredible feeling of empowerment in the face of climate change.

As part of my work I visit local high schools and inspire students to be a part of Power Shift- Australia’s first national youth climate summit.

From experience, I know how isolated you can feel as the only one trying to combat climate change in your school. I love being able to provide students (especially rural and regional students) with the opportunity to be involved in something so much bigger. This is a chance for them to come face to face with incredible international personalities at the front-line of the battle avert climate change, to attend incredible workshops from presenters all over the country in an intensive 3 days, to suss out the green jobs of the future, and to meet with the massive community of other young Australians who are all working for the same cause- a safe climate future. Then to dance like crazy with them at the concert!

Much of our society has lost that sense of community which is vital to relocalisation, and ultimately, overcoming climate change. The AYCC is initiating the regeneration of communities through Power Shift- we’re connecting youth and thus creating the conditions for the generation of solutions. And at the same time, sending a firm message to our elderly politicians that their feeble targets are not enough.

I love meeting and working with other incredible youth who are also intent on averting the dramatic effects of climate change; I love being part of the solution.

Lets Shift some Power!
